The Grounds and Maintenance Gardener oversees grounds and maintenance operations for HSI's Fallon NAS Federal Contract, performs grounds and maintenance labor while providing direction and support to assigned crew as appropriate to ensure work is being accomplished according to organizational policies and customer expectations.


Essential Functions & Responsibilities


This job description reflects management's assignment of essential functions; it does not prescribe or restrict the tasks that may be assigned.


  1. Oversees the day-to-day grounds and maintenance/landscape operations per external customer and HSI/WARC requirements.
  2. Performs labor with crew (i.e. weeding, lifting, digging holes, installing sod)
  3. Sets up and maintains landscape irrigation systems (e.g. drip lines)
  4. Operates tools (i.e. mowers, weed eaters, saws) and heavy equipment (tractors, trailers, skids).
  5. Coordinates grounds and maintenance activities by setting priorities and assigning work.
  6. Provides guidance, direction and grounds and maintenance support to crew as appropriate.  
  7. Identifying development and training needs and work with the Quality Assurance Manager to ensure that training is obtained as needed.
  8. Trains crew in job skills, proper grounds and labor methods, use of equipment, safety practices and other workplace regulations.
  9. Ensures safety of assigned staff and maintains a clean, safe and appropriate work environment.
  10. Maintains inventory of assigned equipment and supplies, coordinating orders as needed.
  11. Completes required documentation and reports in an accurate and timely manner including but not limited to information in Fallon database and monthly labor report.
  12. Creates and maintains effective working relations with staff, co-workers and customers.

  • Multi-line telephone, cell-phone, PC and software applications, and printer/fax/copier.
  • Grounds and Maintenance/Landscaping tools, agricultural and horticulture machinery and equipment including but not limited to: tractors, skids, trailers, mowers, weed eaters, hand and power tools.



  • Exposure dust.
  • Exposure to heavy duty grounds and maintenance product/chemicals.

Minimum Qualifications (Education/Experience)


  • Ability to pass: Department of Defense background check for clearance to NAS Fallon base, HSI's pre-employment drug screening and criminal history background checking requirements.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record (no more than 3 points, no reckless driving or DUI within past 2 years).
  • Must have a passion for the mission of HSI/WARC; preference will be given to candidates with experience working with people who have a disability.
  • Must have field experience in a landscape maintenance environment including irrigation installation and maintenance experience




  • Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism and interact appropriately with all levels of customers and diverse groups of people (individuals served, co-workers, customers, family members, agency staff and supervisors).
  • Ability to demonstrate good judgment and work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to problem solve, multi-task and effectively manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to learn and apply training to carry out job duties and comply with policy.
  • Ability to perform to and train crew on operational procedures related to standard grounds and maintenance/landscaping methods, including use and operation of tools and equipment.
  • Ability to count, calculate basic figures and time.
  • Ability to use computer and other standard office equipment.
